JPG vs PNG vs WebP — Which Image Format Should You Use?
Understand the differences between JPG, PNG and WebP so you always pick the right format. Compare quality, file size, transparency and browser support.
JPG, PNG, and WebP are the three most common image formats, but they are not interchangeable. Each has strengths and weaknesses for quality, file size, transparency, and compatibility. Choosing the wrong one makes your files too large or your images look bad.
JPG vs PNG vs WebP comparison showing file size and quality differences between image formats
JPG — Best for Photos
JPG (or JPEG) uses lossy compression designed for photographs and complex images with gradients. It produces small files but loses a tiny amount of detail each time you save. JPG does not support transparency. Use JPG for photos, web images, and anything where small file size matters.
PNG — Best for Graphics and Transparency
PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency. It is ideal for logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges or text. The downside is large file size — a PNG can be 5-10× larger than the same image as JPG. Use PNG for graphics with transparency or where pixel-perfect quality matters.
WebP — Best of Both Worlds
WebP is Google's modern format that offers the compression of JPG plus the transparency of PNG. A WebP image is 25-35% smaller than JPG and 65-80% smaller than PNG at the same quality. It is supported by all modern browsers. Use WebP for almost everything — especially web content.
Quick Decision Guide
- Photo for web → WebP (smallest, best quality)
- Photo for print or email → JPG (universal compatibility)
- Logo with transparent background → PNG or WebP
- Screenshot with text → PNG (lossless sharpness)
- Animated image → WebP or GIF
